UX: One Bus Away App
Reimagined the home screen, added route finding, integrated features and updated visuals.
BACKGROUND & Research
Audience: Every day commuters and new bussers. The bus system serves people of all ages and bus-savviness, but One Bus Away only caters towards those who know the bus system very well. Our solution ideally serves both.
What Makes it Unique?: One Bus Away is the most trusted app for accurate bus arrival times; it's essentially a dynamic, digital timesheet. Users will search for routes on Google Maps but still rely on OBA for checking times.
Research Methods: Technical research, competitor assessments, user research studies, prototype testing
Competitors: Transit, Google Maps, Moovit, Trip Planner
Initial Digital Explorations
Our reimagined app has cleaner, updated visuals. The flags allow for more exact location pinpointing, and the green flags mark favorites. The map allows users to search by location, the nearby drawer at the bottom allows users to search by bus route, and the search bar allows users to search by end location.
While the map allows users to search by bus stop, the nearby bus drawer allows users to search by bus route. This caters toward mid-level users, who are familiar with routes but may be coming from an unfamiliar location where they don't know the stops very well.
If a user is nearby a bus route they have favorited, that block will automatically pop up, assuming it's the bus they'd like to take. This caters toward seasoned users who always ride the same bus on a commute, for example, and offers the information they'll probably need simply upon opening the app.
(Video coming soon): When tapped, bus stops on the map grow larger and sprout an information bubble to provide user feedback and differentiate them from surrounding stops.
Additional Options Drawer
When a route is tapped, a drawer slides down allowing the user to favorite, set a reminder, or see the full route of the tapped bus.
Bus Route Information
From the bus stop information page, users can tap between different routes and see where that bus goes on the same screen. This way, users can easily compare routes going to the same stop.
For every bus route, users can set reminders about arrivals. It then notifies them on their lock screen, so they won't have to keep opening and checking the app.
